An Introduction
The Promise Foundation is a charitable trust established in 1987 to apply the behavioural sciences to promote the educational, social and economic development of the individual.
We are a core group of psychologists, social workers, special educators and teachers, and an international network of specialist consultants who conduct research, provide services and training in the areas of mental health, education and potential realisation.
Broadly, our programmes focus on the key issues of literacy learning, career development and livelihood planning.
Our Approach
As you browse the Promise website you will learn more about what we have tried to accomplish over three decades.
We have also tried to make this website a resource that you could dip into and you will find a number of open source material on the various pages.
Research for Application
We take an action research approach and our investigations are undergirded by the objective of generating evidence bases that are relevant to the context.
We conduct research to test existing theories. We are also interested in creating new models that emerge from and are responsive to the context.
Our overarching mandate is to apply the findings of our research to inform intervention development that could be relevant to the developmental needs of economically disadvantaged children and adolescents.
Practice Informs Research
Our research questions emerge from the realities of practice in the field.
The complexities of why and how deprivations impact the child, the vexing nature of passive institutions and the challenges to social change, all need better understanding.
We are committed to working closely with children and youth in their homes, neighbourhoods and schools to understand the barriers to development, and to learn from the resilience of those who succeed.
About our Logo!
Our logo is drawn from the idea of an inkblot! Of course as with any inkblot, different people see different things in our inkblot. We would love to know what you see in it!
We see the logo as a tree that represents life contexts and forces. And the flying bird as positivity, development and growth beyond set boundaries. Hence our motto: For Mental Health, Educational and Potential Realisation.
It is our pleasure to network with you and we hope you find the information on these pages useful. We look forward to hearing from you and to being in touch.
